Monoprix

Monoprix, originally uploaded by ¡Carlitos.

El Viaje - The Trip

St. Pancras, originally uploaded by ¡Carlitos.

A Paris !

To Paris !
Great job opportunity, chance for a life change for 12-18 months. Hard to say no to it.

So we are leaving Vancouver for a while. We left most of our things there, including the apartment. Everything is designed to be temporary.

The very same day we got our visa, we flew out from Vancouver. The flight to London was great. We were lucky and were able to make the upgrade to Air Canada's new Executive Suites in one of the newly renovated 767s.

Once we got to London, complications started. To maximize how much we could bring here, we decided to bring as much luggage as we could. In our case, 3 pieces per person. And the hand luggage. In total, 11 pieces.

Because of a previous plan we had made (which had to change), instead of also flying to Paris, we had seats reserved aboard the Eurostar train. That meant we had to take those 11 bulky items to the St. Pancras station. I rented a small station wagon, which fortunately was enough to take all the bags and drop them at the station.

Once in Paris, though, it wasn't that easy. Renting a wagon there (even a car) was prohibitely expensive.... around 150 Euros ! So we decided to take cabs. The first problem was that the baggage had to go in the train as extra baggage, so I had to pick them up at another place inside the Paris station. Once I got to the baggage office, the operators were nice to me (in French) and helped me take all the bags back in a big cart to where Martha and Sarah were waiting for me.

Before we could continue, I had to get the keys for our apartment at the rental office, at a different place. The office was already closed, but I was given instructions and a code to retrieve the key. This took about 1 more hour.

Finally, I came back, and were just about to look for a taxi when were conveniently offered the service as we were coming out of the station. Too convenient. We were about to get into the cabs (2 of them, to fit everything), when they told us it was going to be 40 euros per taxi, for a distance no longer than 2 or 3 km !

Of course, I knew the fare should have been around 10 euros. So we said, thanks but no thanks. But that meant we had to hunt the cab ourselves, some passed by, but seeing our thousands of bags, just ran away.

After a while, we managed to stop a cab that would take half of the bags, Sarah and Martha. After a few minutes, I managed to get another one to get me and the rest of the bags. After all of this, it was way past midnight.

From the moment we got our visa, until the time we got into the new temporary apartment, it was about 30 hours of travel....

Adios - Going away

Going away, originally uploaded by ¡Carlitos.

A dichos, muchas gracias !

12 hours before being 10 years in Vancouver we left. And 1 day before that, there was a going away party/drink session at the usual place, YBC.
I had too many bad tequila shots, so the last part of the evening is sketchy. I will have to thank some unknown souls to have pushed me home, Thanks !

But the best part of the evening (and the days before it) was some very nice and sincere words I got from some people. 2007 was a hard year for me at work, and listening to those words, made me forget about those hard points. In a way, that has made it all worth it. I felt more energized about leaving, and also motivated to come back to Vancouver.

There were the unfortunate couple of cases of people who had the drink with me to only service the relationshp for convenience.... well too bad, because that is exactly what they will be getting back from me.

Un Ciclo - A Cycle

Ente, originally uploaded by ·júbilo·haku·.

Every time I go to Mexico at the end of the year, we manage to go at least one night to Real del Monte or camping to El Chico. Every time, at night, we list to Dogs by Pink Floyd. A complete unique and surreal moment, where the dogs that are barking in the song get mixed with the barking of some real dogs that live in the town, and it is very hard to distinguish recording from reality. Could it be that the real town dogs listen to the recorded ones ? Or maybe it is just the beer in our brains ? Anyway, but it always happens !

But this year there was something else...

Inspiration can come from nowhere, but I think that in many cases, it uses previous ideas. After seeing something, after having listened to something.

About 17 years ago, we did a 'copy' of the cover of Pink Floyd's Ummagumma . 4 photograps, 4 people in each photograph, in each, in different positions.

Now at the end of 2007, those same 4 guys, had a little bit of inspiration to do the 07 version of the same concept. With different equipment (a digital SLR), many extra pounds, now in the same position, but changing the focus point and depth of field, and looking towards infinity (Tangerine Dream style)... part copy, part original

Have A Bad Dream or live it ?

Yesterday I was coming back from a business trip. Flying back to Vancouver, I was watching episodes of the sixth season of Scrubs. Scrubs is a sitcom which is about life in a hospital. The first impression could be that is silly and over the top, and well, in a way it is. But also, even though the episodes are self-contained, all the characters have story arcs that go across episodes or even seasons. So there are some dramatic moments, which after following the characters, can be intense.

One of the episodes I watched yesterday, My Long Goodbye, basically made me cry (and yes I am one of those who cries at movies).  I think mainly because it reminded me of a death-related experience I had when I was 16 years old.

One the best points of the last scene was that it produced me one of those experiences I love in life. When I find the "moment" for a song.  A song that I have, but was missing that moment. In this case it was Keane's A Bad Dream. (I think I've heard it 22 times already)

The other one was, that even I knew how the episode ended, in the same way I knew the ending of Star Wars Episode III, if a show or movie is well written, there's nothing like actually watching the story unfold.  Watching every moment.

I think that applies to life as well. Sure the end goal is important, but even knowing how it ends (which for life, is well, dying), you have to be there very day, watching it happen....

Feliz 1984

At the end of June, my family, my brother and I went to Berlin. Of course one of the things I HAD to see was the Berlin Wall. I would have liked to have been there 20 years ago, when it was the border between east and west, but anyway, even now, it caused quite the impression on me.

I took a few pictures, but this one above in particular, received an unexpected message a few hours after I had uploaded it....

Hi, we have flickr now, since 10 years ago we've made the 'Feliz 1984'  stencils (of which we've seen various versions, that's the way synchronicity is)

So I ask :  : "Why Feliz 1984 ?"

Huxley's "Mundo Feliz'  (A Brave New world)  +  Orwell's '1984'

Of course there's a set of pictures...

Internet has some questionable aspects, but being able to connect, a a moment's notice, at the other side of the world, and find the background on things... that'spriceless

A Warning Sign

A Warning Sign, originally uploaded by ¡Carlitos.

the truth is, I miss you...so...

A warning sign,
I missed the good part then I realized,
I started looking and the bubble burst.
I started looking for excuses.

Come on in,
I've gotta tell you what a state I'm in,
I've gotta tell you in my loudest tones,
That I started looking for a warning sign.

When the truth is,
I miss you.
Yeah the truth is,
That I miss you so.

A warning sign,
You came back to haunt me and I realized,
That you were an island and I passed you by,
You were an island to discover.

Come on in,
I've gotta tell you what state I'm in,
I've gotta tell you in my loudest tones,
That I started looking for a warning sign.

When the truth is,
I miss you.
Yeah the truth is,
That I miss you so.

And I'm tired,
I should not have let you go.

So I crawl back into your open arms.
Yes, I crawl back into your open arms.
And I crawl back into your open arms.
Yes, I crawl back into your open arms...

Home

Sobre Chihuahua, originally uploaded by ¡Carlitos.
