Vote

Ayer envie por correo nuestras boletas (de Martha y mia) para las elecciones que ocurriran en Canada la siguiente semana. La verdad es que las dos oportunidades que tuve en Mexico de votar no lo hice porque no habia "tenido tiempo" de obtener mi credencial para votar.

Pero en Canada, registrarse para votar es muy sencillo. En cierta forma todo el sistema es mas simple gracias a toda la filosofia de confiamos en ti o eres inocente hasta que se pruebe lo contrario, en diferencia de en Mexico que es eres culpable o no confiamos en ti.

Entonces pedimos nuestras boletas por correo.. y la primera decision de por quien votar, conservador (derecha) vs liberal (izquierda) fue muy sencilla.
La segunda decision entre Liberal y NDP, fue un poco mas dificil.

Porque no conservardor ? Porque si algo he aprendido viviendo fuera de Mexico es que si la riqueza esta mas uniformemente repartida, como en Canada o Europa, la vida es mas sencilla y segura. Puede ser que yo pague mas impuestos, pero esos impuestos se reparten en servicios comunes (educacion, salud, asistencia social) que benefician a TODOS, y sobretodo a la gente con menos ingresos, lo cual hace que la sociedad sea mas pareja, y por lo tanto haya menos crimen e inestabilidad.

Lo triste es que muchos Canadienses al oir el bajaremos los impuestos viniendo de los conservadores, votan por ellos pensando unicamente en su aparente beneficio inmediato y monetario de pagar menos impuestos. Total, si mi vecino vive en la calle o no tiene para comer... ese no es mi problema, o si ?

La filosofia americana : el dinero es lo unico, solo importo yo y la felicidad es tener muchas posesiones.

La filosofia socio-capitalista : el dinero es importante, pero importamos todos, y lo importante es hacer lo que te haga feliz (a lo cual el dinero puede ayudar)

Yo voto por la segunda...

Yesterday I put on the mail our voting ballots for the Canadian election next week. The truth is that during the two chances I had to vote in Mexico I didn't do it, because I didn't "have time" to get my voting credential.

But in Canada, registering to vote is very simple. In a way, the whole system runds under the philosophy of we trust you and you're innocent until proven otherwise, in contrast to the Mexican way of you are guilty and we don't trust you.

So we asked for our ballots via mail. The first high level decision on whether to vote conservative (right) or liberal-ish (left) was very easy.

The second decision between Liberal and NDP, was a little harder.

Why not conservative ? PIf I have learned something living outside of Mexico is that if wealth is distributed more evenly, like in Canada or Europe, life is simpler and safer. I may be paying higher taxes (compared to the US), but those taxes are put into common services (education, health) which benefit EVERYONE, but especially people with lower income. This makes society more uniform, thus reducing crime and instability.

The sad part is that some Canadians when they hear lower taxes vfrom the conservatives, they vote for them just thinking in their short-term inmediate, selfish and money-wise benefit of paying less taxes. Because, after all, if my neighbour lives on the street or can't afford healtcare, that's not my problem, right ?

The American way : Money is everything, the only person that matters is me, and the only way to reach happiness is to have lots of things and property.

The Social-Capitalist way : Money does matter, but the everyone around you matters, and happinnes is a personal goal which may be different to everyone (and sure, money can help there).

I absolutely vote for the latter....
